She said "The Unicorn Centre changed my life, I love it here. I’ve learnt so much, and the courses have given me an understanding of how riding therapy and ponies change people's lives. It’s so rewarding to see riders smiling. The Centre has boosted my confidence and my dream was to get a job here when I finished my Level 3 course. I’m really determined to share what I’ve learnt with the new learners and help them to achieve."
The Centre’s Diploma programmes have been running in partnership with Middlesbrough College since 1998 and give learners a rare opportunity to train in a Riding for the Disabled, British Horse Society and British Dressage approved yard. A unique provision in a real working environment, they gain horse care and management and riding skills, whilst helping to deliver a service to local disabled people. They’re also encouraged to compete in the Centre’s monthly shows and work towards RDA coaching qualifications.
Places are still available on the Level 1 and 2 Diploma programmes, which includes functional skills tuition in English and maths. Courses are practical based, helping to improve employability skills and preparing young people for the world of work. Learners are provided with learning support on assessment of need. Although training at Hemlington, all the learners are students of Middlesbrough College and enjoy all the associated benefits the college provides.
Centre Manager Claire Pitt said, “I’m proud to say that such has been the success of these courses that almost 70% of our staff recruited since 1998 has been employed from past students or volunteers – a tangible way of demonstrating that the courses are doing what they were set out to do – provide youngsters with employable skills in a profession that has a poor employment profile.”
